Why Your iPhone Won't Power An Apple Vision Headset, But Could Power Glasses

Mark Gurman's latest report suggests Apple is "considering" making its upcoming non-Pro Vision headset dependent on a tethered Mac or iPhone. However, using an iPhone to power a Vision headset seems impractical. Gurman has a credible record in foreseeing Apple's moves, but he has made mistakes, and this may be another example.

At first glance, the idea of replacing the external battery of the Apple Vision Pro with an iPhone, thus making the headset lighter and cheaper, is appealing. But there are significant challenges. iPhones, unlike devices with cooling fans such as the Vision Pro, cannot sustain peak performance for extended periods without overheating and throttling. Additionally, the iPhone's battery is significantly smaller than the Vision Pro’s, making long-term use infeasible without rapid depletion of the phone battery.

However, this doesn't rule out the possibility of future XR devices powered by an iPhone, although they likely won't run visionOS or be branded under the Vision headset line.
