VRChat Introduces Beta Hand Tracking Support for PC - UploadVR
VRChat Now Has Beta Support For Hand Tracking On PC
The open beta of VRChat's PC version now supports native hand tracking via the SteamVR Skeletal Input system. Although the Quest Store app introduced hand tracking in late 2022, a gaming PC offers a superior VRChat experience with higher-quality avatars and worlds, as well as exclusive PC-only content. Previously, hand tracking on PC required emulating Valve Index controllers, which didn't allow full finger articulation. Now, with the latest beta, PC users can utilize the finger gesture control system from Quest.
However, VRChat doesn't support OpenXR yet, so you'll need specific software to forward hand tracking to SteamVR. Meta Quest users can use the latest beta of Virtual Desktop, while Apple Vision Pro users can opt for ALVR. Native PC VR headset users can use the open-source SteamVR driver for the Leap Motion 2 addon. Note that Virtual Desktop's current support is an experimental beta, which its developer does not consider stable.
This new hand tracking feature on PC could significantly enhance expressivity in VRChat, including the range of sign language signs. Combined with existing eye, face, and body tracking, VRChat aims to deliver a deeper social presence. For the full story, visit UploadVR.
