‘Garry’s Mod’ Sequel Adopts OpenXR to ‘Expand VR Feature Set’ and Support More Devices
Facepunch Studios has announced that their upcoming physics sandbox and game development platform, s&box, will now be using OpenXR. This shift from SteamVR to OpenXR will broaden the range of supported VR devices and expand the VR feature set. Originally, VR support was included when the studio announced the spiritual successor to Garry’s Mod in 2015, with a goal of creating a platform for users to develop and publish third-party games.
Recently, s&box’s developer preview became publicly accessible, featuring VR capabilities thanks to SteamVR integration. However, the studio has now transitioned to OpenXR, which offers greater control, an enhanced feature set, and support for a wider array of devices. Although there are no significant changes in functionality for users, this move allows s&box to operate more independently of Steam.
OpenXR, being a more open cross-platform API, maximizes compatibility and reduces XR space fragmentation, supporting numerous devices and peripherals. While s&box is currently in the developer preview stage, it aims to have a robust collection of content, including unique VR games, by its consumer-ready 1.0 launch. Additionally, Facepunch is hosting a game jam with a £40,000 prize pool.
