Quest 2 Can Now Track Your Hands And Its Controllers Simultaneously Too
Quest 2 now supports multimodal input, bringing it on par with Quest 3 and Quest Pro. Previously, this feature allowed the simultaneous use of hand tracking and Pro controllers on the Quest 2. With the release of the v68 Meta XR Core SDK, the feature now supports the default Touch controllers as well. This update could motivate developers to integrate multimodal support into their apps, though currently, almost no Quest apps use this functionality.
Multimodal input enables seamless transitions between hand tracking and controller use, allowing both input types to be used simultaneously. This could enhance games like GOLF+ and Walkabout Minigolf that rely on single-controller input. Additionally, controllers can be used as generic trackers attached to objects or body parts. However, multimodal input cannot be used alongside features such as Inside-Out Body Tracking, Fast Motion Mode, Wide Motion Mode, and tracked keyboards.
