Meta Releases Experimental Quest 3 Depth API For Dynamic Occlusion In Mixed Reality

Meta has released a Depth API for the Quest 3 headset that allows developers to test mixed reality dynamic occlusion. This feature addresses the current lack of occlusion, which results in virtual objects always appearing in front of moving objects, even if they are further away. The Depth API provides a coarse depth map generated by the headset, which can be used to implement occlusion for both moving and static objects. However, the headset's depth sensing resolution is low, so it may not pick up finer details. Developers have the option to implement occlusion in two ways: Hard, which is free but has jagged edges, and Soft, which has a GPU cost but looks better. Implementing occlusion will require developers to use Meta's special occlusion shaders or their own custom shaders. Visit the source for the full story.
