Gorilla Tag Creator Believes 'VR's Success Is Inevitable'

Kerestell Smith, the creator of Gorilla Tag from New York, discussed the origins and future of his popular VR game with UploadVR. Gorilla Tag, launched in December 2022 on Quest and PC VR headsets, has generated over $100 million in revenue. The game, which involves players swinging their arms like monkeys to tag each other, was prototyped by Smith during the COVID-19 pandemic when physical playgrounds were shut down. Smith, along with David Yee and David Neubelt, envisions a much grander future for VR sports with their new project, Orion Drift.

Orion Drift aims to blend various sports like soccer, volleyball, and golf within a vast space station featuring hand-based locomotion and a capacity for 200 people. The game will blur the lines between spectator and athlete, allowing players to form teams and move freely between different districts. Smith emphasizes the community connections that he hopes to replicate from his time as a top-ranked Echo Arena player.
