Steam Decktop: Combining Steam Deck and Meta Quest HDMI Link Creates a Modular Gaming PC - UploadVR

Steam Decktop: Steam Deck & Meta Quest HDMI Link Make A Modular Gaming PC

At UploadVR, we've experimented with writing articles from within VR. Although it's not a frequent occurrence, it's not entirely uncommon either. Notably, David Heaney reviewed the Apple Vision Pro while immersed in the headset. In a similar vein, this article was drafted inside a Meta Quest 3 headset, specifically using a Steam Deck setup.

Here's the exact gear used:

  • Meta Quest 3 (128 GB Model)
  • Steam Deck (512 GB LCD Model)
  • Decktop Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad
  • 1 TB Micro SD card
  • Shadowcast 2 HDMI capture card
  • Apple iPad AV Adapter with HDMI out and USB-A port
  • Anker 6-in-1 Hub with HDMI out, USB-C power delivery in, and USB-A ports
  • Long USB-A to USB-C cord for capture card video/audio transmission
  • Long USB-C cords for power delivery

The Steam Deck is connected to the Quest 3 with its display turned off, enabling private viewing within VR. The Quest 3 presents a large, compressed 1080p virtual display and the Decktop keyboard is used for typing via Bluetooth. The Steam Deck’s desktop window management allows for the operation of Chrome, Steam, and other hardware via a USB hub.

This setup can address the challenge of small physical screens by offering a larger virtual one in VR mode. The compression may result in some quality loss, but it facilitates multiple windows with significant workspace, useful for tasks like gaming or browsing without disturbing others.
