Sony's Independent MR Headset Now Named 'XYN', Awaiting Announcement of Release Date and Pricing - Road to VR
Sony’s Standalone MR Headset Now Called ‘XYN’, Release Date & Pricing Still to Be Revealed
Sony has announced that its previously revealed enterprise-focused XR standalone device is now named 'XYN', aimed at spatial content creators. Initially introduced at CES last year, the XYN headset features impressive display technology, offering 13.6MP per-eye resolution using Sony’s ECX344A OLED microdisplay. It boasts 90 FPS and 1,000 nits brightness, with 96% DCI-P3 color accuracy, outperforming Apple Vision Pro in resolution and color precision.
During a hands-on experience with the pre-XYN prototype, the Sony SRH-S1, positive impressions were noted regarding its ergonomics, flip-up design, and display clarity. However, issues with the poorly tracked stylus-ring controller and unoptimized content for the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset were observed.
Details regarding the XYN's price and release date remain undisclosed, with XYN Motion Studio PC companion software expected in March 2025. This software includes support for 12 'mocopi' sensors for enhanced motion capture. Additionally, Sony is launching the XYN Spatial capture solution, which transforms images into high-quality, photorealistic 3D CG assets.
Sony emphasizes that the XYN headset supports a wide range of third-party tools but is targeting professional users and businesses, rather than competing with consumer models like Quest. Two color options—black for prosumers and grey for enterprise—were showcased at CES 2025.
