Quest Developers Will Soon Gain Access to Cameras, Ushering in a New Era of "Cutting-Edge" Mixed Reality - Road to VR

Quest Developers Will Finally Get Access to Cameras, Promising New Wave of “cutting-edge” Mixed Reality

Developers creating mixed reality content for Quest have long been frustrated by the limited access to the headset's cameras. However, this is set to change with Meta's upcoming Passthrough API, announced to launch early next year. Meta's VP of VR/AR, Mark Rabkin, revealed that this update will enable a variety of advanced MR experiences including AI applications, tracked objects, and scene understanding. Select developers could soon start testing a beta version of the API. As of now, developers rely on geometric environment representations and could benefit greatly from this enhanced access. Nonetheless, privacy concerns and restrictions on camera data usage remain to be addressed. Additionally, Meta is introducing updated privacy settings with the launch of Quest 3S on October 15th.
