Niantic's WebXR Scaniverse Lets You View Gaussian Splats In Quest 3's Web Browser
Niantic's Scaniverse now offers a WebXR app that allows you to view user-created Gaussian splats, including your own, directly in your Quest 3's web browser. The Scaniverse mobile app for iOS/iPadOS and Android lets users scan 3D scenes using on-device processing. Through the Into The Scaniverse WebXR site, these scans and others from around the globe are accessible via the Horizon OS web browser on Quest 3 and Quest 3S. Niantic boasts that Scaniverse features the "world’s largest collection of splats," contributed by a community from over 100 countries, viewable on a global 3D map indicating their locations.
Initially, Scaniverse required LiDAR sensors and was used for traditional 3D scanning. Later, it evolved to work without LiDAR by using computer vision depth estimation, and it recently transformed to employ Gaussian splatting for higher fidelity scans. This method enhances lighting and reflections and integrates background details, making it ideal for VR viewing. The quality of scans is notable, especially considering they process in mere minutes on high-end phones, unlike more costly options like Varjo Teleport.
For mobile scanning, the Scaniverse app is available on the App Store and Google Play Store. To view scans on Quest 3 or Quest 3S, visit www.intothescaniverse.com. This site also offers a way to launch Into The Scaniverse on other devices using your Meta account. For more details, visit the full story on UploadVR.
