‘Minecraft’ to End Support for PSVR Next Year, Casting Doubt on Future PSVR 2 Compatibility - Road to VR

‘Minecraft’ to Drop PSVR Players Next Year, Leaving PSVR 2 Support Very Doubtful

Mojang, the developer behind Minecraft, has announced that it will cease support for the original PSVR starting March 2025. This move means Minecraft will no longer be playable on PS4 with PSVR in either single-player or online modes. Despite the upcoming termination of PSVR support, Minecraft will still receive updates on PlayStation 4, but only for non-VR gameplay.

The decision impacts PSVR, which was notable for providing first-class VR support from Mojang. With the decline of support for other VR platforms in recent years, such as the Meta PC version and WMR, PSVR was one of the few remaining headsets with full access to Minecraft VR. Looking ahead, there are no indications from Mojang that PSVR 2 support will be introduced, especially given the relatively small user base and other complicating factors.

Sony's lukewarm commitment to PSVR 2 is further underscored by its release of a PC VR adapter, effectively broadening the headset's usability beyond the PS5 ecosystem. Meanwhile, Microsoft's general hesitation toward VR, marked by the discontinuation of Altspace VR and the entire WMR platform, adds to the uncertainty surrounding future VR support.
