Lynx Confirms Next Headset Will Use Android XR, With Sony & XREAL Also Adopting Google’s OS - Road to VR
Lynx Confirms Android XR For Next Headset, Sony & XREAL Also On-board for Google’s OS
Google is looking to expand its Android XR operating system to various partner headsets, despite it not being fully open-source yet. Samsung might be the first to launch an Android XR headset, with Sony, Lynx, and XREAL also planning to adopt the OS. Although Meta has shown interest in allowing third-party use of its Horizon OS, Android XR now presents an alternative for headset manufacturers. For Sony, the Android XR aligns seamlessly with its SRH-S1 MR headset, which is aimed at enterprise applications. Meanwhile, Lynx, known for its R-1 MR headset, plans to incorporate Android XR in future models, streamlining their software development. XREAL, developing AR glasses, is also anticipated to integrate Android XR in future products. Both Meta's Horizon and Google's Android XR systems, while not fully open, may face pressure to become more accessible. For a detailed story, visit Road to VR.
