LG Unveils 4K Micro-OLED Display For "Next Generation" Headsets That Supports Eliminated Motion Blur
At SID Display Week 2024, LG Display introduced a groundbreaking micro-OLED display boasting "4K" resolution and an astounding 10,000 nit brightness. These displays provide a much higher pixel density compared to traditional OLED screens, allowing for ultra-high resolution headsets with slim designs and the benefit of OLED's infinite contrast. Current technologies utilize 2.5K micro-OLED displays from SeeYA Technology and 3.7K micro-OLED displays from Sony, as seen in devices like BigScreen Beyond and Apple Vision Pro.
However, the more pertinent aspect is the brightness: LG's display claims 10,000 nits compared to the reported 5000 nits of Sony's display used in Apple Vision Pro. Due to limitations like the low optical efficiency of pancake lenses and the low duty cycle of VR displays, the effective brightness seen in headsets is much lower than the raw numbers suggest. Nonetheless, LG’s advancements could enhance viewed brightness up to 200 nits under similar conditions, doubling the output of current displays.
Additionally, LG's micro-OLED offers higher pixel density and a broader color gamut—up to 4000 pixels per inch and 97% DCI-P3 color gamut compared to Vision Pro's 3386 pixels per inch and 92% DCI-P3. LG is likely to supply these advanced displays to other companies, hinted by reports of a partnership with Meta to develop future Quest Pro headsets.
