Hands-On with Varjo XR-4: Impressive VR Quality, But Disappointing Passthrough - UploadVR

Varjo XR-4 Hands-On: Stunning VR Quality With Disappointing Passthrough

UploadVR recently had the opportunity to test the Varjo XR-4 Focal Edition, a $9,990 headset aimed at providing VR and MR experiences "indistinguishable from natural sight." Varjo claims its XR-4 series delivers ultra-high resolution passthrough, and the headset is primarily designed for enterprise use, such as visualizing 3D models and training simulations.

Comfort and Build Quality:
Despite its 1-kilogram weight, the XR-4 feels comfortable due to its hybrid halo strap and ample padding. It's not suitable for active gaming, and although it can accommodate glasses, it may feel slightly loose on the face.

Technical Specifications:

  • Displays: The XR-4 features one 4K LCD display per eye, providing a near-retinal resolution of 51 pixels per degree.
  • Field of View: 120°×105°, although practical use may show some distortion and brightness inconsistencies at the edges.
  • Brightness and Color: The headset offers 200 nits brightness and 96% DCI-P3 color gamut, resulting in vivid visuals.

Performance:
The XR-4's high pixel density and realistic rendering powered by a high-end PC deliver stunning visual quality. However, you might need to adjust the eye relief to minimize peripheral distortion.
