Google and Pico Embrace OpenXR, Strengthening Its Position as the Industry Standard, Despite One Significant Holdout - Road to VR
Google & Pico Adoption Further Cements OpenXR as Industry Standard, With One Major Holdout
OpenXR is an open standard designed to enhance compatibility between XR software and headsets. Major tech companies like Google, Meta, Microsoft, and ByteDance have embraced OpenXR, solidifying its status as an industry standard. Despite widespread adoption, Apple stands as a prominent exception, as its Vision Pro headset neither supports OpenXR nor comes with built-in motion-tracked controllers, posing significant challenges for developers. In contrast, Google's Android XR platform supports OpenXR, easing the transition of XR apps across different devices. Additionally, Pico, a division of ByteDance, has aligned its runtime with OpenXR 1.1 on certain devices and is proposing future standard enhancements. Although OpenXR is now an industry standard, Apple remains unlikely to adopt it. For the full story, visit the source at Road to VR.
