Blade & Sorcery Review: Still One Of VR's Best Combat Games
Blade & Sorcery has finally reached full release after nearly six years in early access, but how does this VR physics-based combat game fare in 2024? We've got the full review for you at UploadVR.
Some PC VR games, like H3VR and Onward, seem to linger in permanent early access despite ongoing updates. Blade & Sorcery was long considered part of this group, so its recent full release feels significant. Thankfully, it lives up to expectations.

- Price: $30 on Steam (full release), $20 on Quest (early access).
Though I joined the VR scene mid-2019 and missed the earliest days, Blade & Sorcery's sandbox combat gripped me. Version 1.0’s standout addition is the new 'Progression Mode,' a roughly seven-hour campaign that adds depth without straying from the core gameplay. Using environmental storytelling, it balances action and lore effectively—a nice touch given the emerging rivalry between factions over ancient Dalgarian ruins.
Progression Mode offers a gradual skill and weapon unlock system, designed for replayability with multiple builds to experiment with. The core gameplay loop involves exploring locations to defeat enemies, collect loot, and unlock new skills with Dalgarian dungeon crystals—mostly an excuse for more combat, but one with a rewarding secret ending.
Combat remains the game’s strong suit, delivering brutal and elaborate melee kills. Whether throwing enemies off cliffs or piercing skulls, the visceral appeal is undiminished, even though the lifeless foes’ stares can appear a bit ridiculous.
