AR content is being introduced to Google Maps, but it will only become significant once a compatible headset is available. - Road to VR
AR Content is Coming to Google Maps, But It Won’t Matter Until There’s a Headset to See it Through
Google has introduced a pilot program that will enable select partners to create and display AR content within Google Maps, marking a significant stride toward its vision for 'all-day AR glasses.' Beginning in Singapore and Paris later this year, the initiative aims to integrate AR experiences tied to physical landmarks, accessible through Google Maps, Lens, and Street View.
This move is seen as a way to engage mobile users with AR content, ranging from cultural and historical displays to virtual billboards. However, despite these advancements, questions remain about Google’s long-term XR strategy, particularly when compared to competitors like Meta and Apple.
Google’s efforts in XR seem fragmented, especially following the cancellation of its Project Iris AR glasses and leadership changes. The company continues to develop its ARCore platform and light field video chatting tech, Project Starline. It also hinted at a new prototype glasses device focused on AI and computer vision research, rather than fully-fledged AR capabilities.
