A Varjo Headset Is Being Used To Rapidly Train Ukrainian Pilots To Fly F-16s

A simulator equipped with a Varjo XR-3 headset is being utilized to train Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets, which the country started receiving in August to enhance its defense against Russian attacks. The delivery of F-16s from NATO allies like the Netherlands and Denmark has been hindered by a shortage of trained pilots, as Ukraine's air force has primarily used Soviet-era jets. To address this, Czech startup Dogfight Boss provided a simulator to the Ukrainian Air Force, featuring a highly realistic F-16C cockpit.

Dogfight Boss spent nearly a year refining the simulator with input from European F-16 pilot instructors. The Ukrainian Air Force praised the simulator for its advanced, realistic training capabilities. Dogfight Boss aims to secure funding for at least eight additional simulators for Ukraine by partnering with government and private entities. This initiative follows the recent FAA qualification of a VR-based flight simulator, highlighting the growing impact of virtual and augmented reality technologies in cost-effective, realistic training solutions.
